5.4.1 Scene No. 1: The Police’s Visit to the School

All school activities are suspended so that students, families, and all personnel of Sur Austral School can attend the artistic show organized by the local police at the school.

The performance begins with a show of canine–police training, where an actor pretends to be a criminal who steals from a person and the police officer walks around with his police dog. The master of ceremony (a police officer) asks the children to describe the offender so that the policeman and his dog can catch him.

I am struck by the way in which certain traits and characteristics of the delinquents are presented. In this case, the extra was characterized as an unkempt man, with ragged clothes, long hair, a wool cap, and designer shoes. The master of ceremony reminds the children that they should always pay attention to people with these characteristics, because they can be suspicious and that they should notify the police immediately.

Later, they present a folkloric ballet number and end with a popular music band.

The day before, one of the police officers responsible for the show told me that these types of activities are carried out as a way to engage with the community and to gain more information about the area since there is a lot of micro-drug trafficking. (Field Notes No. 18, November 13, 2014)
